Solstice, Family Xmas, Murphy Brown & More!

Happy Solstice!

Today marks the first day of the Winter Solstice. Ironically, it’s rain and not snow, which is gracing my city of Portland, Maine.  The temps are in the low ‘50’s, feeling more Spring-like than Christmassy—another reminder of global warming.  My little tree, which resembles a bush more than a Christmas tree greets me with its red lights and vintage Santa top.

Green New Deal

Speaking of global warming I was discouraged, but not surprised, to see that the Green New Deal, promoted by newly elected Congresswoman, Alexandria Octavia-Cortez was killed by the Democratic establishment in Congress. Still I have faith that the new progressive contingent will continue to press for a Green New Deal.  It will be interesting to follow the upcoming Congressional skirmishes between young progressives and entrenched leaders.  I know whose side I’m on!

Family Christmas

I’m flying to Chicago on Sunday to spend Christmas with my oldest son, wife and two teenage grandkids and sister-in-law, who recently became a widow.  I’m bringing books for everyone to open on Christmas Eve, copying the Icelandic tradition of giving books on Christmas Eve, which everyone then reads.  As much as I would like it, I’m not holding my breath that my family will embrace quiet reading time.  Below is an image of my son with his two kids taken from their Christmas card.  I love this photo.

Murphy Brown

I hardly ever watch television but a friend persuaded me to followw the new Murphy Brown series with Candice Bergan.  I’ve been impressed with the way they challenge the media.  In an early episode Murphy attends a press conference where she challenges press secretary Sarah Saunders, asking her,  “Why do you lie?”  A Thanksgiving show had three members of a migrant Hispanic family being arrested by ICE while Murphy protested.

A Christmas Wish

World peace feels ever more elusive, which doesn’t mean we shouldn’t all find a way to protest our endless wars.  I will wish for world peace and a rapid end to the horrid caging of migrants and especially children separated from their parents.  I’m making a New Year’s resolution to get more involved in protesting the caging of migrant children.  I’m sick of whining about the injustices in the world.  I need to find a way to feel more effective. Let’s hope it’s within reach.
