Trump Exits & Biden Enters, Amanda Gorman, Remembering my Mother & More!

Pat TaubPat Taub

Trump FINALLY exits!

I breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday, as Trump flew off to Mar a Lago and Biden took the oath of office.  His speech for unity was critical, but words alone won’t unify us.  If the Biden administration can lift people out of poverty through a generous stimulus plan, health care for all, and a jobs program, than the Trump disenfranchised supporters might be less antagonistic.

I delighted in the women in their colorful power coats, in Lady Gaga’s Hunger Games ensemble, but mostly in the jaw-dropping performance of 22 y.o. Amanda Gorman, whose riveting poem perfectly framed our current state of affairs.  I bet the stores will soon be filled with knock-offs of Amanda’s yellow Prada coat.

The American President

Wanting a light break from politics, I watched the 1995 romantic comedy, The American President, starring Michael Douglas and Annette Bening.  While it’s fundamentally a love story, I was struck by the fact that Bening’s character is an environmental lobbyist advocating for a reduction in fuel emissions—a cause that continues to be unaddressed 26 years later!

Vaccine Scheduled!

I can’t believe my good fortune:  I was able to make a vaccine appointment this week.  I will receive my first shot this coming Wednesday and then another in 3 weeks. I’m dreaming of a little vacation in mid-March!  I feel very blessed.

My Mother’s Birthday

My mother, Jane Conrad First, was born on January 25, 1918.  She’s been dead for 20 years, but I still miss her. On her birthday I’ll light a candle for her and offer gratitude for the gifts she gave me: a compassionate regard for others, a love of art and models for creating a warm, interesting home.

Flower Therapy

My mother loved flowers and gardening. Fresh flowers in our home were a constant.  She didn’t always purchase them at market or at a florist.  Mother loved to pick violets found in the woods and flowers growing along the road.  I have adopted my mother’s habit of filling my home with fresh flowers.  Lilies from Trader Joe’s are a frequent purchase.

Wishing you all well as we turn over a new leaf in our country!
