Unrealistic Portrayal of Women in Films; Williams Sisters, Surviving an MRI & More!

Taking Issue with the Way Women are Portrayed in Films

This week I watched the bland film, “Book Club” about four older women in a long-time book club who decide to read “Fifty Shades of Gray.” They become sexually awakened and suddenly each one has a romantic partner!  I find this very unrealistic given how difficult my single friends and I find it to meet a compatible man.

Then I watched some of the Netflix series, “Tunnel,” and “Deadwind,” crime thrillers with female leads playing detectives.  In both series the women detectives show little emotion; they are steely and practically unapproachable. They seem more male than female.  I wonder why they had to interpret their roles in this limited way.  Couldn’t they be tough AND warm and sensitive?

US Tennis Open with the Williams Sisters

Tonight Serena and Venus Williams will play against one another in the US Tennis Open.  It’s always fun to watch them take on one another.  While they are very close, they are also keen competitors. After Serena’s cat suit was banned she played in a tutu.  Will she wear one tonight?

Venus and Serena Williams will play one another tonight, Aug. 31st at 7 PM.

MRI

Last week I had my first MRI, which I was dreading. I’m here to tell you I not only survived but it wasn’t nearly as awful as I had anticipated.  The female technicians were warm and funny.  The worst part was the loud noise for which I was given headphones to listen to music.  They didn’t completely drown out the machine’s noise but proved helpful.

Women in Community

A friend just sent me this group photo from the 2017 Women’s March in DC.  What was remarkable was the way 10 of us crammed into a tiny DC townhouse, owned by one of the women in the photo.  It felt like every inch of her home had a sleeping bag or air mattress.  I knew only one of the women ahead of time, but we all became instant friends. I love it when women bond in magical ways like this.
