Girls and Women in Iran

The female led protest in Iran that was sparked by the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini is now in its fourth week.  Amini was arrested for having some of her hair showing from her under her hijab.  The protest has gained momentum, with men joining. The protest has widened to include economic inequalities and calls for the ouster of Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.  The growing momentum is happening despite a brutal police crackdown.  According to the New York Times, 158 people have been killed, including 28 children. These young Iranians are fearless.

War in Ukraine

As the war escalates on both sides, we move closer and closer to a nuclear war.  There are rumors that the US has rebuffed peace talks.  In response international peace groups are mobilizing, urging the US and Russia to end the war before it becomes nuclear, and we all perish.  The National Anti-War Coalition has identified the week of October 15th to 22nd for nationwide protests calling for an end to wars across the globe.

Grandson Max

Despite troubling international events, life goes on. Seeking balance, I look for everyday moments that warm my heart. Last week my oldest son texted me a photo of grandson, Max, 17, dressed up for a school dance, flanked by his buddies. In the photo Max is the one with the bow tie, following a family tradition of bow-tied men.

My Country Retreat

I’m very lucky to have a country retreat, about an hour and 20 minutes from my Portland home, where I spend long summer weekends, soaking up quiet days and restorative country walks.  Once it gets  cold, I will have to close my beloved country space.  This weekend, I will return as temps are predicted to be in the 60’s.  I think we all need a place where our souls come alive.  City dwellers often find refuge in a favorite park, or in creating a sacred space in their homes marked by a home altar or meditation space.

I have a friend in Manhattan who periodically mails post cards with inspiring messages. Here’s the latest one I received from her.
