Street Theater
Last Friday I participated in the silent tableau, “Gaza Bleeds” staged in downtown Portland. I joined with Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights to protest Israel’s shooting of unarmed demonstrators in Gaza who have been protesting for over two months calling on Israel to end their illegal blockade of Gaza. My task was to cover the killed with bloody sheets. To date approximately 125 innocent Gazans have lost their lives to Israeli snipers.
A Good Read
Lately I’ve been trying to limit my news intake and balance my life by reading some of the great writers I’ve missed out on over the years. I’m in awe of William Trevor’s collection, Last Stories. He chronicles everyday people in Ireland and England with a unique perspective that gives depth and new meaning to their lives. I’m transported every time I enter Trevor’s world.
Kate Spade’s Tragic Death
Like many women I was saddened by the news this week of Kate Spade’s suicide. I was a big fan of her pocketbooks. In fact they are the only designer item I could afford and then at the discount price offered by Nordstrom’s Rack. Here’s an image of her red pocket book I purchased about 5 years ago. Now that Kate’s left us whenever I fling on my red Spade shoulder bag, I will remember her with a new appreciation.
London Calls
Next Wednesday I leave for London to join my oldest son’s family who will be there to accompany granddaughter Jane’s Girl Scout troop’s visit. I’m looking forward to revisiting a city I lived in when my sons were very young. I haven’t been back in 30 years. While there will be huge changes I’m pleased to learn that my favorite pub, “The Holly Bush” is still in business.
Manhattan Yarn Bomb
I took this photo during my Memorial Day trip to Manhattan. I was ambling through the West Village with a friend when I spotted this wonderful yarn butterfly attached to a fence in a small neighborhood playground. I’m always grateful when an unexpected note of joy crosses my path during these turbulent times.
