Serena
Seeking a break from the world’s upheavals raging from wars to global warming-induced disasters that produced record floods in Pakistan and zero water for Jefferson, Mississippi, I took refuge in watching Serena Williams stage a comeback at the US Open.
When Serena announced her retirement, speculators bet she’d lose her first match and then announce her retirement, but she fooled them. She won not only her first match, but her second and is scheduled to play her third match on September 2nd. I feel empowered just watching Serena play and will sorely miss her when she does retire.
Grandson Max
Max celebrated his 17th birthday recently. He’s 6’2” and still growing! Max is a very sweet young man and a loving grandson. He’s a senior at the Oak Park, Il. High School. To date he hasn’t found his future passion, but I’m confident he will in time.
Attorney Woo
Like many of my friends, I’ve been captured by the new Netflix series from South Korea, “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.” It has an unexpected plot. Attorney Woo is an autistic genius with an awkward walk, and discomfort making eye contact, who cracks every case due to her encyclopedic knowledge of the law. It’s charming and guaranteed to keep you up past your bedtime.
Fall
I’m happy to welcome September with the promise of cooler temps, sweater weather and reading by my fireplace. After Maine’s record hot summer, I look forward to sleeping under a comforter and taking bracing walks. I worry a lot about what our hot summer portends for the future and for our planet. It’s infuriating that the governments of the developed world are not seriously addressing climate change nor promoting policies of climate justice.
Women’s Spirituality
In two weeks, I will be teaching Women’s Spirituality for the Portland, Maine senior college. I’ve enjoyed reading about goddesses in ancient times and in different cultures. I long to see more expressions of the Sacred Feminine emerge in our daily lives where women recreate sacred circles to support one another.
