August 9th
August 9th is an auspicious date for me for two reasons: the tragic anniversary of Hiroshima and my father’s birthday, born in 1913. He died in 1994 succumbing to a rare form of blood cancer. My parents lived in Harrisburg, Penna., remaining there during the meltdown of Three Mile Island. I’ve always wondered if my father’s death could be attributed to exposure from nuclear fall-out. He persisted in his long walks during those early days of the Three Mile Island meltdown.
Women Candidates Rocking the Vote
I was uplifted this week by all the primary victories of women candidates across the country, especially impressive was the Michigan win of Rashida Tlaib, a 42-year-old attorney. If she wins in the fall’s general election she’ll become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress. I long to see women in office who support government-funded daycare, parental leave, better schools and who take a stand against our unlimited wars.
Cottage Moving-In Approaches!
I’m moving into my little cottage retreat this Tuesday for which I’ve been collecting furniture and fun objects from antique and thrift stores. I’m also stealing items from my Portland home, like this wonderful vintage photo restored by Maine artist Abby Shahn. I call it “Swimmers.”
A Netflix Spellbinder
I’ve been binging on the Netflix thriller, “The Tunnel,” a BBC series about a team of French and English detectives solving murders on the English-French border. Great acting and plot twists, but not for the feint of heart!
A Joy of Aging
I complain about my old lady aches and pains, but a joy brought by aging has been a closer relationship with my adult sons. I’m more patient and less judgmental, which I’m guessing has made a difference in our connection, or maybe we’re all growing up!
