“Never Again”
The Parkland, Florida school shootings dominated the news again this week. In response student survivors of the shooting launched “Never Again,” their campaign for gun control. Emma Gonzalez, a senior at Parkland High made national news as clips of her rousing speech circulated on the Internet. March 24th has been selected for a “Never Again” march on Washington, DC along with marches of support in cities across the country. Let’s all do what we can to support these young people to make gun control laws a reality.
My Granddaughter’s 14th Birthday
Jane, my oldest grandchild was 14 this past week. Children her age were killed in the Florida shooting, reinforcing my motivation to join the campaign for gun control. Here’s a photo of Jane with her birthday gifts. Most of them are from me. I have to learn how to grandmother with restraint!
Portland Store Front Window
I took this photo of the door at Local Sprouts, a Portland restaurant. It’s important to remember that there is a national counterbalance to Trump and his racist followers. I continue to believe that love can conquer hate while recognizing we all have to play our part to ensure this outcome.
Pilates Progress
While my old body can’t do what it did 10 years ago, I attend Pilates several times a week to work on flexibility and strength. I’m finally getting better at the exercise, “spine stretch,” pictured here.
Honoring Lorraine Hansberry
Tonight I’ll make my way to the Portland Art Museum to watch the documentary, “Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart” about Lorraine Hansberry. She was only 29 when her award-winning play, “A Raisin in the Sun” was performed on Broadway. Tragically she died six years later at 35 from pancreatic cancer. To think what she might have created if her life hadn’t ended at such a young age.
