Mourning Aretha
Like many or all of you I’m filled with memories and sadness at the passing of the “Queen of Soul.” Not only did Aretha have a miraculous voice, but she also had a strong political conscience, fearless in speaking out for Blacks and women. Aretha offered to pay bail for Angela Davis when she was arrested on drummed-up charges in the ‘70’s. I’ll be playing Aretha’s songs all weekend and for many days to come.
Finding Hope
The current issue of The Sun magazine contains an interview with Cornell West, one of our leading public intellectuals. When asked how he manages to remain hopeful in these dark times, he answered: “I’m a prisoner of hope. I don’t believe in optimism or pessimism. I believe in wrestling with despair and trying to generate enough energy to remain Socratic and prophetic in my own life, deeds, and thoughts. The world is always a mess.”
One Woman’s Act to Call Attention to Caged Migrant Children
My friend, Grace, a lifelong activist has been posting these photos around Portland. It’s an image she took when traveling in Mexico, and conveys the sadness of the small migrant children so cruelly ripped from their mother’s arms. Kudos to Grace for doing her part to keep the issue of family reunification alive.
BlackKkKlansman, the new Spike Lee film
This movie is at the top of my weekend list. I’m a big Spike fan ever since seeing his 1986 movie, She Gotta Have It, which was just turned into a Netflix series. Denzel Washington’s son, John David Washington plays the lead for which he’s garnered rave reviews.
Granddaughter Update
My granddaughter, Jane is 14 and starts senior high next week. Her mother sent this photo of Jane in front of her new locker. Can you tell by her wardrobe that she plans to attend art school after high school?
Wishing all a pleasant weekend with lots of Aretha in the background!
