Mother’s Day Actions
Sunday is Mother’s Day and peace and justice groups are marking it with actions to support mothers in jail and migrant mothers whose children were taken from them when they crossed the border into the US.
For the third year in a row Black justice groups have organized “Black Mama’s Bail Out Day,” raising bail money for black mothers incarcerated. Here’s a link to an interview on “Democracy Now” with Mary Hooks, one of the organizers: www.democracynow.org/2019/5/10/black_mamas_bail_out_day_movement
Across the country and close to home in Waterville, Maine a big Mother’s Day rally will take place Sunday to protest Trump’s cruel policy of forcibly separating children from their mothers at the US border. WOW Facebook member, Maryellen Dunn is a principal organizer of this event. Please spread the word and attend if you can: https://www.centralmaine.com/2019/05/09/on-mothers-day-activists-to-rally-in-waterville-against-family-separations-at-southern-border/
Remembering My Mother
My mother, Jane Conrad First died 18 years ago. I think of her tenderly on Mother’s Day remembering her love of beautiful things like her flower garden, antique shop and artful home decorating. She not only instilled in me an appreciation for beautiful art and objects but for seeing beauty in unexpected places like a sales clerk’s warm smile, bringing home the notion to appreciate the kindness of strangers.
A Handmaid’s Tale is Here!
How did it happen so fast? The anti-abortion wave has set us back decades and to an unimaginable degree. Georgia’s new anti-abortion law criminalizes abortion, meaning a woman or girl can go to jail for having an abortion—even assisting a woman to secure an out-of-state abortion carries jail time! Alabama is poised to pass a similar law, but the voting was delayed yesterday after a representative screamed about the injustice of railroading it through.
Co-Housing for Older Women
A recent WOW Facebook stream had members expressing their interest in shared housing, but no one seems to know where to start. A good first move is to gather interested women in your community to discuss the pros and cons and to investigate existing co-housing models. I’m open to being part of such a planning group in Portland. If you’re interested in being a part of this effort, contact me at: wowblog.me
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL YOU MOTHERS AND TO WOMEN WITHOUT BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTERS WHO HAVE BEEN SPIRITUAL MOTHERS TO YOUNGER WOMEN!
