Key West Images

I’m still vacationing in Key West, which is resplendent with memorable images, like the photo looking up at the island’s famous Banyan Trees, or the artful photo of “free” items arranged in front of a shot gun house.  Key West is a place where photo-worthy pictures abound.

My First Post-Lockdown Movie Theater Movie

Key West’s movie theater, “The Tropic” is open with scattered seating, where I watched my first movie theater film, “Courier,” in over a year.  “Courier” is a Cold War spy movie, entertaining but nowhere as absorbing as the movies based on the John le Carre spy novels.  I realized how much I missed watching films on the big screen as opposed to streaming on my TV or laptop.  It felt more intimate to watch a movie in a darkened space without any distractions.

Cuban Coffee

Who would have thought that the best Cuban coffee in Key West could be found at a small over-the-counter coffee bar in a Laundromat?  When ordering one has to project her voice so it can be heard over the thumping and banging of the washing machines and dryers.   Sandy’s Cafe also serves delicious homemade lemonade, which hits the spot on sultry days.

Kids in Cages

This week new photos of migrant kids in detention surfaced.  They were released by the office of Texas Congressman, Henry Cuellar, who visited a center in Donna, Texas, where the photos were taken. The same appalling conditions of migrant kids squeezed together in cages with skimpy Mylar foil blankets not only continues with the Biden administration, but the number of detained children has risen post Trump! Where is the liberal outcry now?  Is Biden fostering complacency?

National Poetry Month

In honor of April as national poetry month, here’s a Mary Oliver image with words I always find inspiring.
