Holiday Images
Walking around a very cold Portland I captured these holiday images. The first is from a new boutique on upper Congress St. I love the colorful tress of different sizes gracing the window. The other image is of the entrance to a townhouse in the West End.
A Holiday Appeal
This appeal does not involve money. It’s a palm card calling attention to the migrant children who have been separated from their parents and remain in substandard US detention centers. The card lists the phone numbers of Maine’s Congressional Reps with an appeal to call them, urging them to end family separations. I can’t imagine a more urgent holiday appeal.
My Chicago Christmas
Sunday I’m off to Chicago to spend Christmas with my son, daughter-in-law and teenage grandkids. I’m looking forward to revisiting the Art Institute of Chicago, where I always gasp over the huge Chagall stained glass. I’m also excited about having high tea at the venerable Drake Hotel. The tea was booked in my honor, which I find touching.
Impeachment Drama
I shudder to think of what new horrible deeds the Orange Monster will execute in revenge for having impeachment pass the House. One thing we can count on is that he will be meaner and even more unpredictable. Let’s hope he doesn’t take us to war for his big distraction!
Christmas Movies
I’m hoping to drag my 15 year-old-granddaughter to see “Little Women” which so far she has only expressed mild interest in. I suspect “Little Women” seems dull in Jane’s world of graphic comics, robots and wacky thrift shop clothes. She loves her grandmother, which is my leverage for getting her to the film. I’m hoping Jane will resonate with Jo’s rebellious spirit.
Holiday Hard Times
I realize for many the holidays will be marred by recent deaths–maybe having to spend Christmas alone or not having money to travel or buy gifts. I hope those who are feeling sad around the holidays have someone in their lives, who cares for them or a friendly church or synagogue to visit. If you know someone who’s alone, try to reach out to them.
