Arriving Home
I’m back home in Maine as of early Sunday morning when I returned from my winter escape to Palm Springs, CA. This was my first extended stay in the desert, which made me aware that I prefer the ocean to the desert. Even so Palm Springs has its own natural beauty with its exotic desert blooms, great hiking trails and soaring mountains hovering over the city like a benevolent monster.
Outrage at Boeing
Being home I’ve resumed my morning schedule where I carry my coffee and yogurt to the TV to watch Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now.” This morning I was in tears hearing the testimony of the parents of 24 year-old Samya Stumo who was on Boeing’s recent flight that crashed in Ethiopia, killing all on board. The Stumos are suing Boeing for criminal negligence. I was outraged hearing Ralph Nader cite the lack of oversight at Boeing both within their system and from the Department of Transportation headed by Elaine Chao, married to Mitch McConnell—enough said.
Joe Biden
Staying with politics, I’m sick of all the headlines being grabbed by Joe Biden for kissing women inappropriately. Yes, he crossed the line, but why not focus instead on Biden’s record? In his first term in Congress he voted against abortion rights. He’s always been a war hawk nor a big fan of the poor and people of color. He showed his sexism during the Anita Hill hearings. Isn’t it high time we demanded to know a candidate’s record on the issues rather than being for him because he’s warm and fuzzy–in Biden’s case, maybe a little too much so at times . . .
Taxes !
Once again I have to confront my messy paper work and often, missing important papers to attack my yearly taxes. I don’t even have it hard as those without an accountant. This year I’ve decided to set my alarm for 30 minutes of tax time, after which I can take a coffee brake or keep working. I’ve used this approach once so far and I keep working after the timer went off. Still as I write this I feel the tax resistance’s looming presence.
