RIP Cicely Tyson, Vaccine, Sundance Film Festival & More!

Cicely Tyson

Cicely Tyson, one of the greatest actresses of all time, died on January 28th at the age of 96.  She refused to take parts that demeaned Black people and won a Tony, Emmys and, at 93, an honorary Oscar. I will always remember Cicely for The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman about a woman born into slavery, who lived to join the ‘60’s Civil Rights movement at 110, when she brazenly drank from a “Whites Only” water fountain. Amazon Prime carries this film. Off screen Tyson encouraged Black women to own their looks, rather than conforming to White standards, helping to advance the “Black is Beautiful” movement.

Vaccine

I am among the lucky ones able to score a vaccine appointment, receiving my first shot this week.  I had hoped to be able to travel several weeks after my second shot, but am confused now after hearing Dr. Fauci say travel should be off limits, even when vaccinated.  My frustration continues . . .

Oldest Son, David

My son David has a birthday on January 30th.  He might be embarrassed if I divulged his age, so I’ll simply say he’s middle-aged, which clearly marks me as an old lady.  David lives in Oak Park, Ill, a Chicago suburb, with his wife, Mel and teenage kids, Jane and Max.  Here’s a photo of David from a Christmas brunch in 2019.

ICE Coming to Maine

This past week news was leaked of under-the-radar plans to build an ICE processing facility in Scarborough, Maine.  This alarms Mainers who have been protesting ICE’s cruel detention of migrants.  A recent Guardian article describes how ICE’s centers have become moneymakers for the private companies that run them.  What’s more they operate in secrecy with virtually no accountability. Weekly protests are being planned for the ICE construction site in Scarborough.*

Sundance Film Festival

Given Covid, the annual Sundance Film Festival, which airs new films from all over the world, is now online.  Films are $15 each.  I registered for a documentary about Covid’s trajectory, starting Wuhan, China.  The film is titled:  In the Same Breath.
