Palm Springs Art and Mineral Baths, New RGB Movie & More!

My Desert Vacation Update

As I continue to enjoy my Palm Springs respite from the polar vortex, I’ve been exploring the desert, developing a new appreciation for its magnificent landscapes.  This week my friend Ily and I went to Indian Canyon where we did the easy hikes and took lots of photos.

Hot Mineral Baths

This week I also indulged in one of the many mineral baths around Palm Springs. I felt sublime after an hour’s soak. Someone told me that the mineral waters contain lithium, which must explain my altered state.  What an amazing natural high!

The Latest RBG film

I saw the film, “On The Basis of Sex,” which follows the young Ruth Bader Ginsburg from her first day at Harvard Law School (where she was just one of just eight women in a class of 500!).  RBG had to fight blatant sexism at Harvard, but was rarely deterred, becoming the first woman to join the prestigious Harvard Law Review.  The film ends with Ruth arguing and winning a landmark case, which established the existence of gender discrimination.  For me, the film was a little too idealized, but women need their sheroes, and RBG is a major shero!

Congresswomen in Suffragette White?

I read somewhere that there’s a campaign for Congresswomen to wear white, in honor of the Suffragettes, to next week’s State of the Union address.   I hope they pull it off, creating an image of a sea of white among all the dark suited men.  I’ve long been a Suffragette admirer:   http://wowblog.me/flashback-friday-remembering-the-suffragettes/

Honoring Native Americans

It’s encouraging to see statues and monuments to Native American women in downtown Palm Springs.  Additionally the Palm Springs Art Museum has a current exhibit featuring Native American artists from the early 1920’s until the present: a powerful exhibit I will return to before I leave for the Tundra.

Agonizing News Alerts

My news junkie self is very much present on vacation, as I agonize over the prospect of  an attempted US led coup in Venezuela.  It’s maddening to hear hypocrites like Pompeo make the humanitarian case for regime change, when  the financial hardships facing Venezuela were brought on by American economic sanctions!
