Lisa Savage
My pre-election jitters are bonkers, making me very grateful that the end is in sight. Just four days to go! I hate being boxed into the “lesser of two evils” choices. My preferred candidate was Bernie, but I will vote for Biden, because Trump is truly evil.
All is not lost: one vote I can happily make is casting my ballot for Lisa Savage, running on the Green Party for Maine’s Senatorial seat. Lisa supports a Green New Deal, Medicare for all and an end to out-of-control military spending. With rank choice voting, I can make Lisa my first choice and Sara Gideon my second choice. Presto, a vote for Savage is not a “wasted vote.”
Fall Cooking
One of my favorite rituals for ushering in fall and winter is preparing my first roast chicken of the season, which I did this week. For years I’ve been following Martha Stewart’s roast chicken recipe, where the chicken roasts on a bed of sweet onions, assuring a fabulous onion gravy with all the richness of French onion soup.
Lose Your Mother
This week I started the amazing non-fiction book, Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route written by Saidyia Hartman. It’s an account of Hartman’s travels to Ghana, attempting to trace the slave trail from Ghana to America, towards a clearer understanding of her identity. Hartman, an African American, discovers that she feels like a stranger in both Ghana and the US. I’m only about a quarter through the book, hooked on Hartman’s mission, wondering how she will resolve her confused identity.
Halloween Décor
Recently, while shopping at TJ Maxx, I found the most amazing, elegant pumpkin and it was marked down to boot. It’s a Mercury Glass pumpkin that lights up! I light it every evening with the same delight as when I turn on Xmas lights. Nothing like a little magic to ease the way in dark times.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN TO ALL!
