International Women’s Day
How thrilling to see photos of women from all over the globe taking to the streets on March 8th in celebration of International Women’s Day. Spanish women rocked, staging a “feminist strike” where they refused to go to work; the strike included women in unpaid jobs like at-home mothers. The impact was felt in the form of train delays across the country. I’d love to see the US hold a women’s strike.
Snow, Snow and More Snow!
Another snowstorm crippled Portland this week putting my blizzard tolerance at an all time low. Today’s full sun and the promise of rapid melting are welcoming. As I age I find the icy and snowy brick city sidewalks unfriendly, making it a challenge to stay upright and not fall! On the positive side I have a warm, cozy home. My heart goes out to the homeless during these cruel winter months.
A Great Read
Snow produces hibernation, providing a golden opportunity for a good read. I’m about halfway through the fascinating new novel, Asymmetry by the young writer, Lisa Halliday. She deftly integrates two very disparate stories: one about a flaky young writer who has an affair with a famous elderly writer rumored to be modeled on Philip Roth; the other story is about a young Iraqi trying to assimilate in the US.
The Portland Art Museum’s Biennial
I’m planning to see PAM’s biennial show this weekend. It promises to be more daring and inclusive than many previous biennials with a strong showing of young artists. I’m especially eager to see the photographs of Sean Alonzo Harris, who took some photos for the WOW website.
Dreaming of Spring
Here’s a photo of flowers I bought at Trader Joe’s. I like to buy several of their small $4 flower bunches, take them apart and mix them up to create flower arrangements I can place throughout my home. Fresh flowers always put a smile on my face.
