Trying to Stay Sane!
The accelerating racist and hate speech spewing from the White House and the Congressional races is making it harder and harder for me to stay sane. Recently addressing his base, Trump singled-out Greg Gianforte, the Congress member from Montana, praising him for violently attacking a Guardian reporter, saying that someone who performs a body slam is “my guy”.
Looking for Baskets of Compassion
In contrast to the maniac in the White House, I’m witnessing more compassion among my friends as if enlightened folks are doing their all to compensate for the pronounced ugliness in the world. A woman in my class of “Women and Aging,” reflected on the caring among class members, dubbing our group “a basket of compassion.” I want to do all I can to keep filling this basket.
A Shaky Footing
Last Sunday morning on my way to church I took a spill and fractured a bone in my left foot. I went straight away to the ER for an X-Ray, which fortunately revealed no brakes but a fracture. I was told to stay off my feet for two weeks, but I’ve cheated a bit by driving and doing mini errands. My impatient nature is being tested!
A Woman with Spirit
A few weeks ago I attended an art opening titled, “Chairs,” where I came upon Karen, an older woman new to Portland. She told me that she had lived in Manhattan where she was a writer and editor, but moved to Portland after having a stroke. She wanted to be in a small community to facilitate getting about. I delighted in her original dress. Karen demonstrates that style and a zest for life can stay with us regardless of our circumstances.
