A Lovely Video
The other day, needing a source of lightness and inspiration, I re-watched the film, “The Goddess Remembered.” It’s a documentary that tells the story of the Women’s Spirituality movement that flourished here in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s. The historical perspective on the goddess era is beautifully told through images and conversations with historians. You can watch it for free online.
Modern Day Goddesses
Thankfully we have a few Congresswomen who are fierce with power and goddess-like in their pursuit of the truth. This morning on “Democracy Now,” clips were shown of yesterday’s hearing with Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, where he was grilled by Congresswomen, AOC, Rashida Tlaib and a few others. They challenged Facebook’s promotion of hate groups and hate advertising. These goddesses triumphed!
Families Torn Apart by Politics
Speaking of politics I recently learned from members of my class on Women and Aging, that many families have been deeply fractured by the politics ushered in by Trump, where Trump supporters and non-supporters often find themselves at loggerheads, even not talking to one another. I knew the country was divided but I haven’t been aware that families were suffering to this extent. What a tragedy!
“Know My Name”
On a recent Sunday the New York Times Book Review wrote about the new nonfiction book, “Know My Name” by Chanel Miller, the young woman who was raped when passed out drunk and found in a dumpster before taken to the hospital. Her case made national news when the rapist, Brock Turner, a Stanford swimming champ, received only a 6 month sentence because the judge was concerned that a longer sentence would have a “severe impact” on Turner’s future. This is a book I will buy and read, not just to honor Miller but because the review deemed her a brilliant new writer.
A Massive Pumpkin
In keeping with the harvest season, here’s a photo of a record-winning pumpkin that tipped the scales at 1300 pounds! I took this photo when I was traveling in mid-coast Maine last week.
