Miranda July
Trying to take my mind off the very unsettling spikes in COVID, I discovered a funny, quirky short story writer, Miranda July. Reading No one belongs here more than you. I laughed a loud on the average of every three pages. A particularly wacky story is “The Swim Team,” where a young woman gives three octogenarians swimming lessons in her kitchen. They practice breathing by dunking their faces in bowls of warm water. Next they get down on all fours and scurry along the kitchen floor flapping their arms and legs. Diving practice consists of jumping from a dresser onto the bed.
Marion Woodman
Moving on from laughter to serious reflection, a Google search took me to Marion Woodman, the famous Jungian psychologist, known for her writings and teachings on the Sacred Feminine. Like a true Jungian, Woodman believes that dreams are messages from our unconscious. For a deeper understanding of the Dark Feminine, this weekend I plan to watch the documentary about Woodman, Dancing in the Flames.
Farmer’s Market
This morning I made my way to a small, charming farmer’s market in Damariscotta, Maine. Volunteers passed out facemasks and hand sanitizers. Here are a few of my market photos. The woman with the attractive baskets and herbal toiletries had to be coaxed into posting for a photo, after saying, “I’m too old.” I did my best to convince her that she was lovely.
