Contemporary Suffragettes
I was buoyed by the sea of white during the Orange Monster’s State of the Union address. I’m thrilled by the boldness of the newly elected Congresswomen and by their initiatives like the “Green New Deal.” Establishment Democrats are pushing back against the new progressives in their midst. It’s up to us, the public, to find way to support them—easier said than done but it’s paramount that we find a way.
Stacey Abrams
Another shining light on the political front is Stacey Abrams whose Democratic rebuttal to meanie-in-charge was very moving and on target. She spoke of “a better America,” which for me means a country the opposite of Trump’s where compassion and justice triumph. It will take a while to get there but without visionaries like Abrams it will be even more difficult.
Palm Springs Sidewalk Stars
Downtown Palm Springs is ablaze with sidewalk stars similar to those found in Hollywood. Like a typical tourist I find myself walking with my head down to read the star’s names. Here’s an image I photographed of Phyllis Diller’s star.
Joshua Tree National Park
Here’s one of my better photos from last week’s visit to Joshua Tree State Park, which I learned is the largest national park in the country at 1,235 miles! It’s truly a spectacular park daunting in its amazing rock formations, desert flowers and plants. I was fairly proud of my photo until my oldest son critiqued it for showing my fingerprint in the lower left hand side.
The Sunrise Movement
This week I attend a small gathering where we watched a live podcast featuring Naomi Klein and two young climate activists, from the grass roots Sunrise Movement. They were pitching their organization, appealing for new members to join in their action plans. I was impressed with the dedication of the youthful leaders. We desperately need to support these young activists. We owe it to them to stop the assault on the climate so they have a future that doesn’t resemble the end of the world!
