August in May, A Sudden Death, Appearing in the Boston Globe & More!

August in May

Wow!  Wednesday set a record for Portland, Maine with temps climbing close to 90!  It was crazy in that the previous day I was wearing a spring coat and a day later I’m in a T-shirt and thin slacks. Does this portend an unusually hot summer?  It certainly speaks to the erratic temps brought on by global warming.

A Sudden Death in the Family

My cousin Melinda’s husband of close to 40 years died unexpectedly from complications due to pneumonia.  He had been soldiering along with what Melinda and Gary thought was a bad cold.  She persuaded him to go to the ER and in a matter of hours he was dead!  My heart goes out to my cousin.  A reminder to be grateful for each day, as one never knows when the Grim Reaper will come calling.

Appearing in the Boston Globe

I was flabbergasted this week when a friend in Boston emailed me noting he had seen my blog quoted in a Globe obit for Connie Chandler Ward.  The obit reporter lifted a few passages from an interview with Connie I posted in my WOW blog.  The reporter used selections where Connie talked about her views of death and the mystery of life, which deepened for her with age.

Iran Drumbeats

I remain worried that the crazed war cabinet in charge will persuade the Orange Monster to tear up the Iran accord and then bomb the country.  I’ve signed on for a Nation trip to Iran this September, wanting to see all the beautiful Persian art and architecture in the event that Dr. Strangelove and Co. decide to demolish it!  A horrible thought, but not beyond the realm of possibility.

Video Binging

My favorite way of escaping the dismal, depressing news is to binge on videos.  This week I finished watching the four part series of Howard’s End.  I fell in love with the sisters, Margaret and Helen for their bohemian ways and captivating Bloomsbury-type home.

The charming book-filled flat occupied by the bohemian sisters of “Howard’s End.”

I also watched episode three in the new season of A Handmaid’s Tale.  More and more it resembles the direction of the US. especially if Trump is impeached and Pence becomes President; he’s vowed to outlaw abortions and to insist on conversion therapy for gays and lesbians.  Please progressives get your act together and deliver us from a pending theocracy!
