“National Emergency” Action
While vacationing in Palm Springs I’m trying to keep my activist spirit alive. Last Monday I joined in the national action to protest Trump’s “national emergency” where cities across the country mobilized to protest Trump’s manufactured emergency. In Palm Springs several hundred turned out with signs saying the real national emergency is climate extinction, poverty, etc. My sign read, “The Real National Emergency is Caged Children.”
Hope
I’m feeling hopeful and very moved by the growing youth participation in the Climate Extinction movement spearheaded by 16 year-old Greta Thunberg from Sweden, a modern Joan of Arc. She deserves and needs the support of adults. Here’s to American teens getting on board with the same passion as their European counterparts!
Despair
My despair is fueled by the US plan to invade Venezuela to provoke a civil war, overturn Madero and ravage their oil supply. By now this is a familiar US tactic, made all the more repulsive by hypocritical claims that the US is on a humanitarian mission in Venezuela.
Palm Springs Art Museum
The Palm Springs Art Museum is a desert treasure. On a recent visit I was taken by a display of female imagery in glass. I loved these whimsical powerful female forms.
College Basketball
The college basketball season is heating up as the season winds down towards the March’s championship games known as “March Madness.” My team, Syracuse has had an up-and-down season. Saturday I’ll be glued to the TV as I watch the Syracuse-Duke game. Duke’s star player, Zion Williamson, had a freak accident in his last game where he fell and blew out his sneaker! If he returns Duke has a huge advantage over Syracuse.
Sunday’s Oscars
While I love movies I don’t know if I have the patience to sit through the Oscars. The frequent commercial breaks can be maddening. I’m hoping that Roma gets best picture. I didn’t see Glen Close in The Wife, but friends who saw it insist she should win. I’m partial to Olivia Coleman’s portrayal of Queen Anne in The Favourite.
